Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday, November 5th and the Plainfield Fire Protection District is asking that you please take the time to also test your smoke alarms, replace smoke alarm batteries, review your home fire escape plan and check the contents of your emergency kit for expired items when you change your clocks to fall back one hour.

Working smoke alarms save lives. Test all smoke alarms monthly. If your home’s smoke alarms are powered by 9-volt batteries the batteries should be replaced at least once a year. Smoke alarms powered by 10-year lithium batteries should be replaced if they fail to test properly because the lithium battery inside them cannot be replaced. Hardwired smoke alarms have battery back-up for power outages, if the battery is a 9-volt battery it should be replaced at least once a year. Replace all smoke alarms every 10 years or if they fail to test properly.

Please also review your home fire escape plan with every member of your household. Plan for 2 ways out of every room. Decide who will help family members that need assistance getting out of the house. Make sure everyone knows where your family meeting place is located. This is also a good time to review the contents of your emergency supply kit to make sure everything is up to date.

Please contact the Plainfield Fire Protection District at 815-436-5335 if you need assistance testing or changing the batteries in your smoke alarms. Please also contact us if you have any questions. For more information please visit our website at www.plainfieldfpd.com.
