Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires with 3 times the average daily number of
cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day. Fires involving ranges and cook-tops are the most frequently reported
home cooking related fires (NFPA statistics). To keep a cooking fire from ruining your holiday celebration
the Plainfield Fire Protection District has some safety tips for you to keep in mind:
Stand by your pan! Stay in the kitchen when cooking on your range or cook-top so you can
monitor the food you’re cooking.
Always stay in your home while cooking your turkey and frequently check on it.
If you use a turkey fryer always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for safe and proper
use.
Other safety tips to keep in mind include:
Keep children at least 3 feet away from the stove.
Keep children away from hot foods and liquids.
Make sure your floor is kept clear so you don’t trip while carrying hot food or liquids.
Keep knives in a safe location where they won’t get knocked down or pulled down off of
the counter.
Make sure electric cords from small appliances such as coffee makers are not dangling off
the counter where they might get snagged and knocked down or pulled down by a child.
Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children in a high, locked cabinet.
Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.
Make sure your homes smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working
properly.
