On December 18, 2025, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Plainfield Fire Protection District was dispatched to a reported residential structure fire in the 2400 block of Burbank Street in unincorporated Will County.
Upon arrival, fire crews observed smoke and fire showing from a bedroom window of a one-story, single-family residence. All occupants had safely exited the home prior to the arrival of fire personnel and were confirmed to be uninjured. The occupants were temporarily relocated to a neighboring residence.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, preventing further extension. An investigation into the origin and cause of the fire was conducted.
The investigation determined the residence was without electrical power due to a fallen tree branch that damaged overhead power lines. During the power outage, the homeowners were utilizing a candle to provide illumination. The candle was placed too close to combustible materials, which resulted in the ignition of the fire.
The Plainfield Fire Protection District was assisted on scene by the Lockport Fire Protection District, Troy Fire Protection District, Romeoville Fire Department, and the Minooka Fire Protection District. Aurora Township Fire Protection District, Bolingbrook Fire Department, Homer Fire Protection District, and Northwest Homer Fire Protection District provided fire station coverage during the incident. MABAS Division 15 Fire Investigators assisted with the investigation. ComEd and Nicor Gas responded to secure utilities.
As a result of the fire, the residence was deemed uninhabitable, and Will County Building Department was notified.
Candle Safety Reminder
The Plainfield Fire Protection District reminds residents that candles should be used with extreme caution, especially during power outages. Candles should be kept at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn, placed on stable, non-combustible surfaces, and never left unattended. Residents are encouraged to use battery-powered flashlights or lanterns as a safer alternative when electrical power is unavailable.
