On Sunday morning, April 30, 2023 at 0251hrs the Plainfield Fire Protection District responded to a reported
barn on fire in the 600 block of Wheeler Road in unincorporated Plainfield. Fire companies arrived to find a
large two-story barn with heavy fire showing. The fire was beginning to extend to the residents home and
another barn in close proximity. All residents of the home had self-evacuated prior to the fire departments
arrival. The fire was stopped from extending into the house and the other barn before the large two story
barn was completely extinguished. The home and other barn sustained minor fire damage. The two story
barn was a total loss. While several animals were able to be removed from the barn, the residents did lose
several livestock in the fire. The area has no fire hydrants so the fire was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm
which brought in additional resources to assist at the scene. Plainfield Police and PEMA along with Kendall
County Sheriff also assisted with traffic control on the scene.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
